A Sniper, Sponge and Best Actress Oscar winner walk into a Derby Match…

It’s no joke! American Sniper, The SpongeBob Movie, Still Alice and Derby Crazy Love share the screen with a few shoves this week at The Civic Theatre.

Opening of Feb. 27, Clint Eastwood’s top grossing Best Picture nominated American Sniper (rated 14A) is rife with controversy.  The film uses the autobiography of Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in American history, as it’s source. Many argue the film lets the ‘Legend’ off to easily, others embrace Kyle’s heroism with patriotic fervor.  The one certainty is the divergence from life to book to film provides a great opportunity to open a discourse about representation, the mechanics of Hollywood’s dominant film structures and the responsibility for active rather than passive viewing.   Join us for a post-film discussion following Sunday’s screening.

And naturally when you think of the perfect pairing for a film about the horrors of war, you think of SpongeBob of course. Opening as the early show for the run of American Sniper, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (rated G) will literally wet your appetite for all sorts of screen strangeness.  When a diabolical pirate above the sea steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, SpongeBob and his nemesis Plankton must team up in order to get it back.

On Wednesday, The Nelson Killjoys Roller Derby Team presents Derby Crazy Love for a team fundraiser.  Maya Gallus and Justine Pimlott’s newest documentary takes viewers into the heart of the emerging roller derby phenomenon, a vibrant DIY community of third wave feminist empowerment.

And concluding the week, our Thursday film Still Alice (rated PG), based on the best selling novel, features the Oscar winning performance of Julianne Moore.  Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a devastating diagnosis, Alice and her family find their bonds tested.

Eclectic enough for you?

Cheers,
Jason.
