The Pitch (Mar. 13 – 19)
Cons, scandals, corruption, more scandal and the class divide this week at The Civic.
Bringing this week into Focus (rated 14A), Nicky (Will Smith), a seasoned con man, loses focus on his latest scheme when a femme fatale from his past shows up to blur his plans.
Originally released on Valentines Day, the adaptation of the scandalous book phenomenon 50 Shades of Grey (rated 18A) will put a little colour on the Civic screen and the cheeks this weekend. Do I really have to add a description here? You get the picture.
Government corruption is tackled in Leviathan (rated 14A) winner the Golden Globe Best Foreign Language Feature and best screenplay at Cannes. In a Russian coastal town, Kolya is forced to fight the corrupt mayor when he is told that his house will be demolished. He recruits a lawyer friend to help, but the man’s arrival brings further misfortune for Kolya and his family. Back for a second screening for our new regular Monday Babes in Arms spot at 11am.
For a little more scandal, the infamous womaniser, Don Giovanni (Royal Opera House) set to Mozart’s music suffers an ill fate for his transgressions on Wed. Mar. 18.
And for this week’s Thursday film, we take you to Turkey for an examination of the divide between the rich and poor as well as the powerful and powerless in Turkey in the Palme d’Or winner, Winter Sleep (rated PG) based on the short story “The Wife” by Anton Chekhov. Aydin, a former actor, runs a small hotel in central Anatolia with his young wife Nihal with whom he has a stormy relationship and his sister Necla who is suffering from her recent divorce. In winter as the snow begins to fall, the hotel turns into a shelter but also an inescapable place that fuels their animosities…
Cheers,
Jason.
