The Pitch (Oct. 23 – 29)
Confront your fear of heights, war, thwarted love, Tim Curry in heels and zombies this coming week at The Civic.
Scaling the worlds tallest mountain or the tallest sky scraper, this weeks main features on the split are both going to make you teeter on the edge. The Walk (rated PG) recounts the amazing true story of high-wire artist Philippe Petit’s epic walk across a high wire strung between the twin towers. A caper film with literally ‘high’ art as its goal rather than treasure. Petit enlists a team to help him break into the World Trade Centre towers to pull off his daring walk across the void.
If that isn’t high enough for you, perhaps a climb to the summit of Everest (rated PG) is more you adrenaline. On the morning of May 10, 1996, climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin) from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man. Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds.
In slightly more enjoyable mountain conditions, the Whitewater Ski Team brings us the latest ski film from Warren Miller Entertainment. Chasing Shadows plays for two-screenings on Monday, Oct 26 as a fundraiser for the team. Watch JT Holmes, Seth Wescott, Caroline Gleich, Steven Nyman, Marcus Caston and more as they pursue turns on the mountains of our dreams: Chamonix, Alaska’s Chugach, the Chilean Andes, Utah’s Wasatch and the mightiest range of them all: the Himalaya. These athletes are masters in their element, and with every cliff drop, perfect line and neck-deep powder turn, they motivate us. Warren Miller once said, “A pair of skis are the ultimate transportation to freedom.”
Our next Performance on Screen, Romeo and Juliet comes to The Civic Theatre Wed. Oct. 28. Witness the tragic beauty of true love in Kenneth MacMillan’s elegant re-telling from The Royal Ballet. “It’s a National Treasure not to be missed” – Jeffery Taylor.
And then there was Thursday. One for our Thursday regulars and one for our Nelson’s drag dressing love affair. At 6:30, Oct. 29th we bring Paul Gross’ Hyena Road, said to be one of the best Canadian films and a giant leap for Paul Gross since Passendale. One reviewer had this to say, “This movie had it all …. drama, humour, terror, violence, empathy, compassion, tension, love, heartache, it had it all. And it showed a realistic storyline about how Canadian forces had to deal with a very difficult situation in building a road through a heavily mined enemy territory and the varying elements of dealing with the Afghan culture in doing so. This is the best Canadian movie I’ve seen so far. Highly recommended. I believe it should be a candidate for movie of the year. I saw the Martian. This was better.” So there you go. But what do the rest of you have under your army fatigues? If it is gold or Lacey than you are ready to do the time warp again. Rocky Horror Picture Show (rated PG) turns 40 this year. Bring the props, but please leave the hot dogs and prunes out of it.
On Saturday, Oct. 31st at 1pm the dead will walk the streets of Nelson in the second annual Zombie Walk. Starting at 11am, you can have your Zombie make up done by one of our talented make up artists for a small fee to cover the expense of supplies. Following the walk, come back to the Crypt for a free zombie program.
Coming next: Goosebumps, Exhibition of Screen – The Impressionists, Arcade Fire – Reflektor Tapes, and Forbidden Room.
