The Pitch (Feb. 19 – 25)
Mountain and Eastern culture; this week at The Civic.
We wrap up our award season programming with the top contenders for the Best Foriegn Language Oscar from way back East and a couple celebrations from the mountains, Kootenay style, hosted by Kootenay Mountain Culture, Whitewater and Project Kootenay Adventure for the Visually Impaired.
Our trip East goes much further out than Toronto and stretches across the Altlantic to the edge of Europe’s old Eastern Bloc, and across the Mediterranean, to the seat of the old Ottoman Empire and the Hashemite Kingdom situated along the East bank of the Jordan river. If that trip sounds good to you, The Civic is your one stop travel agent. On Wed. Feb. 24th, Hungary’s powerful Golden Globe winning Holocaust film, Son of Saul, screens with Jordan’s, Theeb, about a young Bedouin boy who tags along with his older brother escorting a British officer across the desert. Turkey’s, Mustang, about five orphaned sisters who suddenly have to live under strict rule while members of their family prepare their arranged marriages, screens on Thurs. Feb. 25th.
For more continental tastes, Joy, starring Jennifer Laurence, the young actress who has garnered three best actress nominations for all three films she has worked on with Director David O. Russell, plays on Sat. and Sun. Feb. 20 & 21st. The Danish Girl, about artist Einar Wegener’s preparation to undergo one of the first sex change operations, splits again on Tues., Feb. 23rd with Anamolisa, the brilliant puppet animated film from the vast imagination of Charlie Kaufman.
Moving neither West nor East, we travel straight up, toward the heavens, to the top of the world with a couple of Mountain culture events hosted by some amazing groups from our own backyard. Coldsmoke Opener presents: The Mountain Culture Elixir on Fri. Feb. 19th. Some of the regions best photographers and filmmakers will be in house, presenting their work, from the backyard and beyond. Look forward to presentations from locals legends like Steve Ogle,Douglas Noblet, Steve Shannon, Nick Diamond and Jackson Baio and more. On Mon. Feb. 22nd, you can Touch the Top of the World with Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind climber to reach the summit of Mt. Everest; brought to you by Kootenay Project Adventure.
Coming next week: Exciting Update!!! Many of you have asked and we have just confirmed it, Lady in the Van has been confirmed for the weekend and Tuesday starting Feb. 26th. Zoolander 2 will split as the late show. A live stream broadcast of the Oscars will take place on Sun. Feb. 28th and Best picture nominated, Mad Max: Fury Road plays Feb. 29th as our February Member Monday movie (Free for members, $10 for everyone else.)
