The Pitch (Mar. 4 – Mar.10)
All Hail, Civic! that shalt be home to a good time this Saturday.
The third annual Oscar season celebration gala is upon us. This year’s party, Hail, Civic! The Golden Age of Hollywood, takes its theme from the Coen Brothers’ latest love letter to film, Hail, Ceasar! (rated PG) The film takes place in 50’s era Golden Age Hollywood, and its move to bigger Technicolor spectacles to lure audiences back to the big screen. Like Nelson Hustle two-years back, we are expecting Nelson to come out in glorious costume from the era. Best dressed awards for 50’s Star, Starlet, Technicolor male, female and ensemble characters will all be up for grabs on the night. Sweet and savory eats courtesy of West Coast Grill will be served up as well as a delectable electro-swing set from DJ Lady V. Live entertainment from the talented troupe of circus performers from Discover Circus, will entrance every bit as much as synchronized swimming mermaids; as will a scintillating dance de la femme fatales, The Show Cats.
Tickets, available here, are $35 and include the first drink and admission to the special screening of Hail, Caesar! following the party.
If for some reason you can’t make the party, there will be other opportunities to catch Hail, Caesar over the weekend, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Splitting along side, with exception to no screening on Saturday, How To Be Single (rated 14A), will provide advice on being single, as only Rebel Wilson can impart. There’s a right way to be single, a wrong way to be single. New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, be it a love connection, a hook-up, or something in the middle. And somewhere between the teasing texts and one-night stands, what these unmarrieds all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love. Sleeping around in the city that never sleeps was never so much fun.
International Women’s Day is on Mar. 8th, and for the second year running, The Nelson and District Women’s Centre is celebrating with amazing films featuring empowered females. This year’s film is from Haifaa Al-Mansour, the first Saudi woman to make a feature film in Saudi Arabia. Wadjda, winner of too many awards to list here, is about an enterprising Saudi girl, who signs on for her school’s Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy her dream green bicycle in a culture that frowns upon girls riding bicycles.
This week’s Thursday offering, features Michael Caine, a retired orchestra conductor on holiday with his daughter and his film director best friend in the Alps when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip’s birthday. Youth (rated PG), from Paolo Sorrentino, director of last year’s best foreign language Golden Globe and Academy Award, The Great Beauty, is another sumptuous visual feast.
I’ll see you in the arena.
Coming next: Deadpool, Surprise Coen Brothers’ Member Monday classic, Royal Opera Houses new production of La Traviata and Rams.
