Mom’s night out! This week at The Civic.

Dads, it’s time to pull up your socks and make a nutritious dinner and put the kids to bed so that our lovely partners and mother to our children can go out with the other moms and celebrate that difficult role and the impossible expectations it holds through the humour of Bad Moms (14A). Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell play overworked and under-appreciated moms who, pushed beyond their limits, ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence. Enjoy your share of dairy, sugar and gluten at the concession.

On the split, some other power house comedic ladies, don The Ghostbusters (PG) proton packs to kick some phantom butts in NYC.

The Tragically Hip wraps up their current tour with a final date in their hometown of Kingston and the The Civic is taking you there with a free commercial free live-stream brought to you by The CBC. The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration screens on Sat. Aug. 20. We are pleased to have the Canadian Cancer Society on hand raising funds for its Brain Cancer Research Fund in honour of Gord Downie, the Hip’s lead singer who is battling Glioblastoma. The Civic is part of a national campaign to share the Hip’s concert all while raising critically needed funds for brain cancer research.

Making up for lost time, our bi-weekly Wed. docs are turning weekly for the rest of the summer. Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words (PG), playing Wed. Aug. 24th, offers an in-depth look at the life and work of avant-garde musician, Frank Zappa. Tickled plays as our next doc installment, Aug. 31.

Greta Gerwig is back for a second Thursday in a row. She is one the ofoddball owners, whose radically dysfunctional lives are impacted by the arrival of a dachshund that is passed from owner to owner. Wiener-Dog (PG) is the latest from Todd Solondz, director of Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness.
