The Pitch (Sept. 2 – 8)
Meryl Streep on the Shamisen and other music of strangers as directed by Woody Allen.
Confused? Well then read on and all shall become as clear as an azure sky in deepest summer.
Meryl Streep stars as Florence Foster Jenkins (PG) in Stephen Frears’s latest. Born Nascina Florence Foster, Florence Foster Jenkins was an American socialite and amateur soprano who was known and mocked for her flamboyant performance costumes and notably poor singing ability. So if her instrument was her voice, than to whom does the shamisen belong?
The answer lies in the animated film, which shares the Fri-Tues run this week. Kubo and the Two Strings (PG) accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the past with his magical instrument, and now he has to unlock a secret legacy and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.
Perhaps Yo Yo Ma pairs his cello with the shamisen in The Music of Strangers along with the rest of the Silk Road Ensemble in this amazing documentary from Morgan Neville, the director of the Academy Award winning 20 Feet From Stardom.
and for our Thursday tidbit, Woody Allen’s latest brings the talents of Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Steve Carell together at Cafe Society (PG) in a tale set in the glitz of 1930’s Hollywood.
Up next: War Dogs (TBC) with Captain Fantastic and All The Time in the World for our doc Wed and from New Zealand, The Hunt For the Wilderpeople for our Thursday night movie.
