The Pitch (Oct. 7 – 13); The Week at a Glance

Off of one Blazing Saddle and on to a Magnificent other.

Our Gene Wilder tribute and Western spoof yields way for a classic Western re-imagining.  The Magnificent Seven (14A), the quintessential ensemble Western film, based on one of the greatest Akira Kurosawa films, The Seven Samurai, is remade here by Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day, which again features the screen talents of Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Throw Chris Pratt and Vincent D’Onofrio (Gomer Pyle from Full Metal Jacket, and Wilson Fisk from Daredevil) into the mix and you should be looking at a good time.

With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Whose voice do you hear when you think amazing documentaries?  If you answered Werner Herzog, ding, ding ding, ding! If you’ve never seen a Herzog doc, come on, get with it.  If you have, you know what a treat they are.  The Civic Theatre is your sugar man this upcoming Weds. where our doc for the night is Herzog’s latest, Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World. See even the name is amazing, but I have no idea how I’m going to fit that up on the marquee. Herzog explores the internet and the connected world with contributions from figures such as Elon Musk, Kevin Mitnick, Lucianne Walkowicz and Lawrence Krauss.

And then there was Thursday. An example of what computational feats can accomplish in the wrong hands. Anthropoid (14A), is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the World War II mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler, and the main architect behind the Final Solution. Heydrich, the leader of occupying Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia whose reign of terror prompted self-exiled Czech and Slovak soldiers (Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan) to hatch a top-secret mission that would change the face of Europe forever.
