The Pitch (Dec 2 – 8) The Week at a Glance

Trolls, elves and Stooges run amok this week at The Civic.

A great variety of programming for the beginning of December.  Fun for the whole family, Poppy (Anna Kendrick), the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly-cautious, curmudgeonly Branch (Justin Timberlake) set off on a journey to rescue their friends after the Bergens invade Troll Village. Their mission is full of adventure and mishaps, as this mismatched duo try to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done. Trolls (G), plays over the weekend/Tuesday run.

And once you’ve already gotten used to looking at little people, come to The Civic Theatre, Saturday afternoon for a warm precursor to the Santa Parade on Baker Street later that evening.  Knee high folk, whether children or elves will be sure to make merry for Home For The Holidays Celebration, with a visit from Santa, prizes and other festive activities.  Bring a donation for the Nelson Food Cupboard and receive a free mini popcorn. Doors at 12:30.

We have a special treat for our doc Wednesday, sure to be a crowd pleaser, Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive, Ghostdog, Down By Law), directs a documentary on the amazing band The Stooges, formed in ’67 and fronted by none other than a young Iggy Pop.  Gimme Danger (PG), premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, “The Jarmusch film that reverberates throughout this doc like hallucinogenic afterglow is his vampire drama Only Lovers Left Alive featuring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as the grooviest pair of culturally-savvy neck-biters ever put on film. Iggy Pop, aka Jim Osterberg, could easily play a member of the film’s vampire coven (he even appears in the Canadian vampire musical Suck), while the cool, gothic fixings in his home as well as his Michigan origins, presumably offered Jarmusch inspiration for his vampire flick.” Whether you are a fan of The Stooges or Jim Jarmusch, jump in the mind of both of them Wed. Dec. 7th.

And to cap off the week; our Thursday film is The critically acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge (14A) based on the true story of American army medic, Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) who refused to bear arms. In Okinawa, during the bloodiest battle of WWII, he somehow single-handedly evacuated 75 men from behind enemy lines without firing or even carrying a gun. The only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, Doss also became the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was presented with the award by President Harry Truman.

Coming Next: Dr. Strange, Hardwin’s Judgement presented by Ecosociety, Elle and Rogue One.
