This Week at the Civic (Jan. 31 – Feb. 06)

The week’s film confirmations are in and yet again, Nelson must wait for 12 Years a Slave.  We hoped to open Steve McQueen’s powerful film for our first Thursday film of Black History Month, but instead we will  celebrate black history with a screening of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (rated 14A) on Feb. 06 starring the radiant Idris Elba.  We will keep needling Fox for a Feb. 13 follow-up screening of 12 Years a Slave.

On another spectrum of February, we do get to usher in the month of love with Spike Jonze’s Oscar contender Her (rated 14A). A modern love story between a lonely man and his intelligent computer OS from the creator of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.  And on the topic of love, who doesn’t love Mary Poppins?  Saving Mr. Banks (rated G) recounts the true story of the pain staking efforts for Walt Disney to acquire the rights and convince author P.T. Traver to work with him to turn her story into one of the most endearing films of all time.
