From the novel “There are No More Spies” (1987) by Bill Granger

For those of you wondering why Pierce Brosnan would do another spy thriller movie after his stint in the James Bond series… I was intrigued as well. When I started into the movie I was caught up by the character of Peter Devereaux (Brosnan) who is a calm, collected, and utterly cynical retired spy. There are elements of the thrillers of Trevanian and John Le Carre here: an ex-CIA agent is brought back on a personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil (Mason, played by Luke Tracy) in a battle involving high level CIA officials (Hanley and Weinstein) who were Devereaux`s comrades-in-arms from war days and a Russian presidential candidate, Federov. Unlike the John Le Carré movie of a few weeks ago(A Most Wanted Man) there is plenty of action here and the story is compelling on a personal level for Devereaux and Mason, his antagonist-protege. Olga Kurylenko who appeared opposite Daniel Craig in `Quantum of Solace`is suitably statuesque as Alice Fournier, the war-atrocities witness that Devereaux is tasked with protecting.

The film title is a quote from the character of Devereaux’s handler Hanley: `Know what we used to call you Peter?…the November Man…because after you passed through, nothing lived. You were one bleak mztherfzcker my friend.

The film’s tagline is a great lead-in to a movie which is a lot of fun with some plot twists that may surprise everyone.
