The monoculture of Panem is almost at an end and the diversity of a typical week at The Civic is about to begin.

…but, not all of it is cultured.

20 years ago, the screen was graced by the sophisticated comedic stylings of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in their seminal work, Dumb and Dumber.  And like an extremely fine malt, the sequel is now ready for consumption.  Lloyd and Harry are back for another adventure in Dumb and Dumber To (rated PG) opening Fri. Nov. 28. Warning, this dram is more likely spew out of your nose than go down the gullet all smooth like.

As a palate cleanser allow me to recommend another fine production from the Royal Opera House of London.  La Traviata, part of the Capitol and Civic theatre Performance on Screen collaboration plays Mon. Dec. 1.  Be transported to mid-19th century France in Guiseppe Verdi’s famous opera.

Ski culture is near and dear to Nelson’s heart, which is why one of the best Ski Resort programs resides here.  Warren Miller’s No Turning Back celebrates 65 years of mountain culture and adventure filmmaking that has lead Warren Miller Entertainment to every end of the winter world.  Come support the Selkirk College SROAM program’s fundraiser for the Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries Society on Wed. Dec. 3.

A promising young drummer attends one of the most prestigious music schools in the country under the tutelage of the school’s fearsome maestro of jazz.  Whiplash (rated 14A) was the festival opener at the 2014 Sundance film festival and the closing gala film of the Vancouver International Film Festival and has garnered a lot of award buzz especially for the amazing performance given by J.K. Simmons.  This is a Thursday film not to miss!

Coming soon, The Penguins of Madagascar is opening for the entire week Dec. 5.

With this kind of diversity, I expect to see everyone in Nelson and surrounding areas out to at least one of these offerings.
