Home From the holidays

The holidays are over and it’s back to reality, and it is definitely no holiday for the protaganists of this week’s films.  Angelina Jolie directs Unbroken (rated PG).  Co-written with the Coen Brothers, the film follows Olympian Louis Zamperini after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII where he spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft with two fellow crewmen before he’s caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

Also tasked to bring us home from the holiday, our Thursday film, The Homesman (rated 14A) selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, have the job of literally escorting immigrants home, hence the title.  When three women living on the edge of the American frontier are driven mad by harsh pioneer life, the task of saving them falls to the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank). Transporting the women by covered wagon to Iowa, she soon realizes just how daunting the journey will be, and employs a low-life drifter, George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones), to join her. The unlikely pair and the three women head east, where a waiting minister and his wife (Meryl Streep) have offered to take the women in. But the group first must traverse the harsh Nebraska Territories marked by stark beauty, psychological peril and constant threat.

Trees in your living room? Come back from your fantasy and meet me in the stark reality of the Civic’s very comfortable seats and excellent concession offerings.

Cheers,

Jason.
