The Pitch (Feb. 13 – 23)

Oscar nominees take over The Civic Theatre! Download or print the brochure here
Micheal Keaton’s Birdman hovers over buildings while Stephen Hawking’s Theory of Everything reaches far beyond into Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar regions where the flow of time unspools 12-years of Boyhood in the span of 2 and 3/4 hours. With enough gravitational pull to cause Whiplash on re-entry, don’t be surprised to see some of these Oscar nominees break up into a myriad of Animated and Live Shorts. With crash down in The Song of the Sea, unconscious and in a state of dream, The Tale of Princess Kaguya will surface as a distant recollection as you recover Two Nights, One Day later in time to watch the TBA Best Picture winner on Monday, Feb. 23.
Don’t worry about it, my heads spinning as well. This time of year is like a kid in a candy store or me faced with a full platter of bacon. We got a lot of great film to serve up. Just coming off Selma and The Imitation Game, The Civic Theatre screens another Best Picture nominee Birdman (nominated for 9 Oscars) as the featured movie and inspiration for the theme of this year’s Oscar Gala Birds of a Feather, Sat. Feb. 14 as well as two performances on Sun. Feb. 15. Alejandro González Iñárritu conjures a beautiful piece of reflexive stream-of-consciousness cinema about a washed up actor trying to recover his family, his career and himself in the days leading up to the opening of a Broadway play.
The following day, Mon. Feb. 16 is a day of programming not to miss. How many times have you glossed over the Best Shorts categories in your Oscar picks. Have you ever had the chance to see these amazing films? Well then, let us engage you. This year 450 theatres played a theatrical program of the live action and animated shorts and The Civic got in on the action. The animated shorts program begins at 6:30 and the Live Action program at 8pm. Special double bill pricing in effect. Come to either single bill at regular price or add on the second feature for only $3.
Aside from these new to The Civic Oscar treasures, we are bringing back best picture nominated Theory of Everything (nominated for 5 Oscars), Boyhood (nominated for 6 Oscars) Whiplash (nominated for 5 Oscars) and a back by popular demand encore of The Imitation Game (nominated for 8 Oscars). Also getting a much deserved encore, not a best picture nominee even though it should have been, is Interstellar (nominated for 5 Oscars). Don’t regret not seeing this one on a big screen.
And to add some further diversity to this already full program, the Belgian film Two Nights, One Day (nominated for best actress) represents the best in international cinema along with two of the most artistic nominated best animated features of the year; the Irish, Song of the Sea and The Tale of Princess Kaguya from Studio Ghibli in Japan.
See the movies and then come for the big event on the big screen. A by donation live stream of the Oscars will commence right after Kaguya around 4:15 on Sun. Feb. 22nd. And following the results, a screening of the TBA Best Picture Winner will play Mon. Feb. 23rd
And the nominee for best community cinema… Nelson’s own Civic Theatre.
Coming Soon: Selections from the Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival: Map to the Stars, Monsoon and Mommy.
