Fast on the heels of “Snowpiercer” comes another post-apocalyptic story and this too is timely- 10 years after a global economic collapse, a loner(Eric) pursues the three men who stole his only possesion, his car. The story is either a modern-day western or a road movie with elements of mystery and suspense…On the journey Eric meets the brother (Rey) of one of the car thieves and they form an uneasy comradeship.
Guy Pearce as Eric and Robert Pattinson as Rey are great. Pattinson(from the Twilight movies) is surprising as the dim-witted Rey who follows a man hell-bent on killing his brother. What separates yet another post-apocalyptic film from what has gone before is a focus on the human condition instead of the setting. It is not just that supplies are limited and legal consequences are a thing of the past but the question of how life goes on in a world without any rules.
“The Rover” is a bleak and brutal film. However the characterizations of Pearce and Pattinson are so compelling that one is irresistibly drawn to the climax of the story- and the closing frames of the film are an ironic conclusion.
