The Pitch (Apr. 24 – Apr. 30)

The Pitch (Apr. 24 – Apr. 30)

A full week of films you won’t find at a near-by multi-screen.

Real life horror, art-house horror and comedy horror, plus amazing films from Canada and Brazil.

Helen Mirren, no stranger to the Civic screen, graces us with her shimmering visage of flickering light and shadow once more; this time portraying Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, who sought to regain a world famous painting of her aunt plundered by the Nazis during the horrors of World War II.  Woman in Gold (rated G) plays in the early slot starting Friday.

Sharing the late slot, It Follows (rated 14A) is an art house/horror hybrid that has re-imagined the classic horror tropes with an auteurish flair. Call it highbrow horror. Typically by their fifth weekend, major studio horror films are down in the depths of the box office charts, but It Follows is just getting warmed up. After a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, Jay finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. The New York Times went so far as to say that the scares in It Follows are akin to “the evil in a David Lynch film”.

But if you like your horror with a whole lot of comedy, look no further than the Civic for a pair of back by popular demand screenings of What We Do In The Shadows (rated PG). From the creator’s of Flight of the Conchords, this mocumentary of Vampire flatmates will leave in stitches.

Following a Babes in Arms, Intergenerational screening of last week’s Boychoir, Monday night is Pt. 2 of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) hosted by the Self Design High, Wild Earth Program.

and what’s on for Wednesday?… Saddle up your moose Mountie, we have some Canadian film to celebrate.  April 29 is National Canadian Film Day (not quite a banking holiday, but should be on your calendar none the less).  The Civic Theatre is proud to be part of the second annual NCFD and will be celebrating with a pair of Canadian gems.  Jean-Marc Vallee, better known for Dallas Buyers Club and Wild should be wider recognized for his seminal Quebecois film C.R.A.Z.Y.  Come and see this multi-award winning piece of seminal Canadian cinema at 6:45 and stay for the contemporary Regina shot future cult classic Wolfcop at 9pm w/ a post screening Skype Q&A with director Lowell Dean.  As a series of strange and violent events begin to occur, an alcoholic policeman realizes that he has been turned into a werewolf as part of a larger plan. Both screenings are by donation.

For our Thursday film, the Best Foreign Picture nominated, Pedro Almodovar produced Wild Tales (rated 14A) from Brazil, tells the six short stories of distressed people to hilarious effect.

So save your gas, so much more diversity right here on your community single screen.

Cheers,
Jason.
