The Pitch (Dec. 12 – 25)
No bah humbugs here.
Starting off this week’s Pitch, and leading right up to Christmas, we bring you Scrooged himself, Bill Murray, everyone’s favourite misanthrope, St. Vincent (rated PG) opening this Friday, Dec. 12. Vincent (Murray) a hedonist train-wreck befriends a young boy whose parents are in the middle of a divorce. St. Vincent screens an extra day on Wed, Dec. 17 @ 2pm as our first “Babes In Arms” program for parents with young children. The lights will be dim and your children free to cry, no matter what Bill has to say.
Moving right along, a man, desperate for work (Jake Gyllenhaal), hunts out his own train-wrecks and other such sensational fare as a L.A. crime journalist who uncomfortably straddles the line between observer and participant in Nightcrawler (rated 14A) opening on the split with St. Vincent.
There are never too many opportunities to come together to celebrate and enjoy family and friends and a feeling of community. We decided that on Sunday, Dec. 14 @ 1pm to open our doors with a free event, welcome our community in, and remind ourselves and everyone we know just how fortunate we are to live in a community that works together to achieve great things, in turn always improving our collective quality of life. The Civic Theatre today is directly a result of this outstanding (and uniquely Nelson) community connectivity. Sorry Bill, no misanthropy here. Come for Santa and stay for a free screening of Raymond Brigg’s Snowman and Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life.
Wednesday, Dec. 17, is shaping up to be a busy day; after our “Babes in Arms” screening, Nelson’s own Freeride Entertainment presents their new film produced with Red Bull Media House in one of only 3 Canadian premiers. On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter plays on Wed. Oct. 17 at 8pm. In 1971, ‘On Any Sunday’ starring Steve McQueen opened in theatres and wrote its place in motorcycle history. It also transcended the sport to reach a wide audience through a cast of engaging characters and variety of heartfelt stories. ‘On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter’ will continue this family tradition and also pass the torch to the next generations. A lot has happened in the past 40 years, but the passion for riding is timeless and continues today.
Also on Dec. 17, starting at 10pm, The Civic is pleased to present The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies on it’s international release date. Bilbo and the gang are out to save Middle Earth all the way up to Christmas.
Happy Holidays,
Jason.
