No “long winter’s nap” for the folks at the Civic
After only a single solitary day hiatus for Christmas, we are coming back boxing day with a gentle wallop from the soft nurse robot turned combat bot in Big Hero 6. It opened to great critical acclaim and has so far been nominated for an Annie award, the highest honour given for excellence in animation and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. Big Hero 6 plays through until Tues. Dec. 30.
Looking for a family friendly way to bring in the New Year? Look no further. New Year’s Eve at the Civic is going to be an evening of family fun, film and pizza with a live-feed on-screen countdown to midnight! Come in your pjs (stuffies and blankets welcome). This is a dry, family-friendly, all-ages event. Yes, something for everyone on New Years Eve: at 8 pm we’re screening Book of Life, followed by other undisclosed screen pleasures until the New Year countdown. Individual and family tickets available at civictheatre.ca.
Kicking off 2015, The Drop, will be our first Thursday screening, Jan. 1. It’s about a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost. Starring James Gandolfini and written by Dennis Lehane, writer of Clint Eastwood’s multi award winning Mystic River. Certified Fresh with 89 tomatoes.
2015 is the year the Civic embraces crowd sourced programming. We will be able to book more diverse niche films through the community taking part in spreading the word and pre-purchasing tickets. Our first effort is with, Awake: The Life of Yogananda, for Mar. 11. It is an unconventional biography about the Hindu Swami who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920s. We need to pre-sell 70 tickets to secure our booking. So far we have sold just over half the required tickets. If you are interested in bringing this film to Nelson, please buy your tickets here.
