The Pitch (Jan. 16 – 22)

Duck and Cover!

duck and coverDue to it’s 1941 involvement in the Manhattan project, Trail, BC became a military target for its contribution of hard water to the development of the atomic bomb. And now with the confirmed screening of Seth Rogen’s inflammatory, The Interview (rated 14A), Nelson could become the second West Kootenay city to became a target for nuclear strike.

The thought that Rogen’s comedic lambaste of the North Korean regime could be taken as an act of war is in itself comedic. But then again, comedy seems entwined with the insanity of nuclear armament as proven by Stanley Kubrick when his attempt to make a serious film about nuclear deterrent resulted in one of the funniest films of all time, Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Stopped Worrying and Love The Bomb.

When the host and producer of “Skylark Tonight”, a celebrity tabloid show, lands The Interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, they are recruited by the CIA to turn their trip to Pyongyang into an assassination mission. The Interview screens in a special single night showing Wednesday, Jan. 21

The Manhattan project would have been a non-starter without Einstein’s theorem, but without another great physicist, the Civic would not have this multi Golden Globe nominated, and lead actor winner to screen as its main feature this week. Based on the memoir, Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Wilde, The Theory of Everything (rated PG), deals with her relationship with her ex-husband, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, his diagnosis of motor neuron disease, and his success in physics.

And screening on the split, we have Tim Burton’s latest Big Eyes (rated PG) staring Amy Adams, Golden Globe winner for lead actress for her role. Based on the true story of Margaret Keane, her phenomenal success in the 1950s, and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works in the 1960s.

And on Thursday, Jan. 22, the Civic finally gets its chance to play Foxcatcher (rated PG).  This amazing film, nominated for Golden Globe best picture and lead actor for a surprising dramatic performance from Steve Carrell, is based on the true story of the greatest Olympic Wrestling Champion brother team joining Team Foxcatcher led by multimillionaire sponsor John E. du Pont as they train for the 1988 games in Seoul – a union that leads to unlikely circumstances.

For great film, the Civic’s got you covered, so why not duck in for a spell?

Cheers,
Jason.
