The Pitch (Mar. 6 – 12)
This week, The Civic Theatre aims to ruminate, celebrate, educate, illuminate and entertain through a plethora of diverse offerings from around the world.
Opening Mar. 6 for the weekend/Tuesday run, The Brits, led by the ever dashing Colin Firth, are sure to entertain you in true Bond Fashion when they start recruiting for the elite international spy network Kingsman: The Secret Service (rated PG).
Next up: the yanks will have you ruminating when Academy Award winning Julianne Moore (Alice), a Columbia University professor, and her family are confronted by her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimers disease in an added Babes in Arms early afternoon screening of Still Alice (rated PG) on Monday, Mar. 9.
To celebrate women and girls from around the world this International Women’s Day, The Nelson and District Women’s Centre and The Civic Theatre present Girl Rising. Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins tells the stories of nine girls from different parts of the world who face heartbreaking injustices. Despite these obstacles, the brave girls offer hope and inspiration. By getting an education, they’re able to break barriers and create change.
Paramahansa Yogananda, an Indian yogi and guru, introduced millions of westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi (Apparently the only book on Steve Jobs’ iPad). On Wednesday, Mar. 11, the film Awake: The Life of Yoganada, The Civic Theatre’s first, and successful, crowd sourced program, will be sure to illuminate audiences further through this beautifully made unconventional biography about the visionary figure.
Wrapping the week up with another Thursday gem, the Russians educate us on the corruption of the country’s ruling elite through the story of Kolya, who is forced to fight the corrupt mayor of a small coastal town when he is told that his house will be demolished. Leviathan (rated 14A) won the Golden Globe Best Foreign Language Feature and best screenplay at Cannes.
Which countries will you be visiting this week?
здоровье!,
Jason.
