The Pitch (May 8 – 14)

The Pitch (May 8 – 14)

Monkeys, dogs and ageing rockers rock The Civic.

We had planned on getting Noah Baumbach’s, While We’re Young, in which Adam Horowitz (Ad Rock from the Beastie Boys) plays a part, but lack of digital prints made it impossible.  Ironically the only change this would have made to the slug line would have been swapping “rockers” with “rappers”.  But as it is, our rocker, Danny Collins (rated 14A), played by Al Paccino, is going to be every bit as good a film.  Danny can’t give up his hard-living ways. But when his manager (Christopher Plummer) uncovers a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, he decides to change course and embark on a heartfelt journey to rediscover his family, find true love and begin a second act.  Keep an eye out for While We’re Young, coming soon to a Thursday near you.

On the split for the Weekend/Tuesday run, Tina Fey narrates, Monkey Kingdom (rated G), Mark Linfield’s nature documentary that follows the struggles of a young monkey mother to care for and raise her new baby in the wilds of Southern Asia. Certified 93% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Monkey Kingdom is sure to delight human families.

And with the power of animals on film not to be underestimated, The Civic calls in the Dogs for its Thursday Night Movie.  White God (rated 14A), certified 92% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, was the winner of the Prize Un Certain Regard at The 2014 Cannes Film Festival (an award to recognize young talent and to encourage innovative and daring works.) Thirteen-year-old Lili fights to protect her dog Hagen. She is devastated when her father eventually sets Hagen free on the streets. Still innocently believing love can conquer any difficulty, Lili sets out to find her dog and save him. Meanwhile, all the unwanted, unloved and so-called ‘unfit’ dogs rise up under a new leader, Hagen.

And on Wednesday, May 13, The Civic Theatre hosts a Nepal Earthquake Relief fundraiser with a screening of When The Iron Bird Flies, an up-close and personal journey, exploring the complex interactions between contemporary Tibetan Buddhism and western culture. The film’s directors,Victress Hitchcock and Amber Bemak, have graciously provided the film, rights free for this screening. This is a 100% non-profit fundraiser with all proceeds going directly to Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche’s organization, the Shedrub Development Fund which is doing amazing work in Nepal to aid the Earthquake Victims. His monasteries are currently assisting in search and rescue efforts, rebuilding homes and aiding those in need.

Come out and support some great films and a great cause this week at The Civic
