The Pitch – What’s playing at The Civic (Oct. 27 – Nov. 2)
Round up the Bronies and head to the Civic this weekend.
The most recent television iteration of these plastic figurines, Friendship is magic, has somehow spawned a cult following; my daughter sure loved them. But aside from that, the series even inspired grown men into fandom – check out the doc Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony. Finally getting its big screen props, My Little Pony: The Movie, directed by and penned by a couple of veterans of the show, plays this weekend alongside, in perfect marriage, the drug fueled adventures of Barry Seal featured in American Made.
Barry Seal, a TWA pilot, is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States. The operation spawns the birth of the Medellin cartel and almost brings down the Reagan White House.
You can’t get a program this close to Halloween without a few Zombies walking through. This years Zombie Walk, the 4th Annual, is taking its cue from Dawn of the Dead. On Saturday, Oct. 28th, Dawn of the Kootenay Dead starts at Reo’s video at 1pm for Zombie transformations from our talented crew of special effects make-up artists with support from sponsor, The Tickle Trunk. At 3pm we’ll take the walk over to Chakho Mikkha Mall to bring the zombie apocalypse to unsuspecting shoppers. With bellies full of brains, we take in the 1978 classic, Dawn of the Dead back at the Civic Theatre for a free community screening at 4pm.
Creeping ever closer to Halloween, Dario Argento’s masterpiece of horror, Suspriria, co-presented by Reo’s Video Emporium, plays in a beautiful 4K restoration for its 40th anniversary on Monday, Oct. 30th. Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place.

A true ‘art’ house film, this first ever oil painted animated film, Loving Vincent, plays as our Thursday Movie. Each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, using the same technique as Van Gogh, created by a team of 115 painters. Wow!
