A mini British Invasion descends on the Civic this week.
Shaun The Sheep (rated G), The latest from Aardman Studios, who brought us Wallace and Gromit, opens this week on the split with Ian McKellen as Mr. Holmes (rated G).
Scoring a 99% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the subtle and meticulous attention to details brings the non-verbal Shaun The Sheep to life in a way that many films for grown-ups can learn from. A perfect companion piece to Aug. 20th’s Thursday film The Tribe, with its use of Ukranian sign-language with no subtitles, both films rely on the power of visual story telling to communicate. When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan, and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it’s up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.
Sherlock is a very popular character these days thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch, but Ian Mckellen is no hack in his portrayal of the iconic Mr. Holmes in his later years. Set in 1947, a long-retired Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and rising detective son, finds himself haunted by an unsolved 30-year old case.
Our Thursday film Infinitely Polar Bear follows a manic-depressive mess of a father (Mark Ruffalo) who tries to win back his wife (Zoe Saldana) by attempting to take full responsibility of their two young, spirited daughters, who don’t make the overwhelming task any easier.
