The Pitch (Feb 12 – 18)
The Oscar race is on, and so is the race to fit in the rest of the contenders we haven’t screened yet.
6 academy award nominated films in one-week, and on a single-screen! Mark your calendars because they will be coming at you fast and furious ~ and not as in the film, that surprisingly garnered no nominations.
If you didn’t buy a house in Arizona during the housing collapse and are stuck with us in dusty old February Nelson, be sure to join us this weekend and Tuesday for the Best Picture nominated film, The Big Short, about a group of Wall Street players who spotted the bubble burst of the sub-prime housing loan market and bet against the American economy. If losing your physical house doesn’t wreck your home, be like Carol and strike up a romantic relationship with a younger women in 1950’s New York. Nominated for Best Actress and Supporting Actress, Carol finds Todd Haynes at his masterful best.
The Danish Girl, about artist Einar Wegener’s preparation to undergo one of the first sex change operations, splits Monday with Anamolisa, Charlie Kaufman’s animated film that is being hailed as beautifully humanist. Both films play again in reverse order Tuesday, Feb 23rd.
On Thursday, Best Foreign language nominated Son of Saul, told from the perspective of a Sonder-kommando, is infused with a technique that drives the drama as much as the actors’ performances, like last year’s Birdman. An encore screening of Room follows at 9:15 on Feb. 18th.
Best foreign language nominee from Jordan, Theeb, Joy, starring Best Actress nominated Jennifer Lawrence, and Best Foreign language nominee, Mustang from Turkey, all play the following week alongside Whitewater’s Coldsmoke Opener and Project Kootenay Adventure’s presentation of Touching The Top of The World
Best picture nominated Mad Max: Fury Road plays Feb. 29th as our February Member Monday movie (Free for members, $10 for everyone else.)
