The Pitch (Jan 22 – 28)

A little more 19th century winter, a side of sibling love and some Shakespearean treachery this week at The Civic.

Weekend & Tuesday main feature
In this age of digital media, Tarantino, forever the fetishist of cinematic history, shoots his eighth film, The Hateful Eight (rated 18A), the way an epic western would have been made back in the day, on glorious 70mm film, scored by the immortal Ennio Moriconne and complete with an overture and intermission. Unfortunately, The Civic doesn’t have a 70mm projector to screen the film the way it was meant to be seen, but the DCP still promises to be a visual feast from a true cinema aesthete, and guaranteed to stay in focus and not get hairs in the gate.

Splitting the screen with the eight nefarious characters of Tarantino’s winter locked western, Sisters (rated 14A) brings the dynamic duo of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey to the screen to bring balance to the frigid masculine driven violence of Taratino’s and last week’s Iñárritu 19th century snowed in epics. Two disconnected sisters are summoned home to clean out their childhood bedroom before their parents sell the family house. Looking to recapture their glory days, they throw one final high-school-style party for their classmates, which turns into the cathartic rager that a bunch of ground-down adults really need.

Member Monday
As January’s Member Monday lands within the run of The Hateful Eight, we thought it appropriate to mount on the big screen, the cult classic that made Tarantino a cinema icon.  Pulp Fiction plays at 7:30pm on Jan. 25th.

Community Events
The 2016 Lion’s Club Variety Show comes again to the Civic Stage.  Be sure to support this great that raises funds for the club’s charity work.

Thursday Film
All hail, Macbeth (rated 14A)! This amazing new big screen adaptation, playing as the week’s Thursday film, stays true to the source material with beautiful cinematic flair and phenomenal performances from Michael Fassbender and Oscar winner, Marion Cotillard.

Whoa! that’s a busy week at The Civic.  I almost forgot how much diverse programs we can get on this single screen of ours.

Next week: (Another busy one) Brooklyn, Spotlight, The Smalls: Forever is a Long Time, Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci from the Royal Opera House and Room
