The Pitch (Oct. 14 – 20); The Week at a Glance
Did Storks bring a bouncing baby to Bridget Jones?
With the love interests of Patrick Dempsy and Colin Firth, and a 14A rating, I’m guessing that Bridget Jones’s Baby came by other means, but Storks (G), does share in on the action for this weekend/Tuesday run.
Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.
Bridget Jones delivers laughs… and a baby. Bridget’s focus on single life and her career is interrupted when she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch … she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby’s father.
“As was the case with Miles Davis in jazz, Bowie has come not just to represent his innovations but to symbolize modern rock as an idiom in which literacy, art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary can be rolled into one.” Rolling Stone magazine
David Bowie is the man who elevated his music to what can only be described as an art form, so it is only fitting to honour the late great man with a special Art on Screen presentation of David Bowie Is, the documentary film of the fastest selling exhibit ever at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, the world’s leading museum of art and design. The film, directed by BAFTA award-winner Hamish Hamilton, has exhibition curators Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh as guides and, providing insight into never-before-seen letters and diary entries. The two, from the V&A’s Department of Theatre & Performance, said in a statement that they were deeply saddened by Bowie’s death: “His far-reaching influence on cultural life is unparalleled and the film offers illuminating detail about key objects from the David Bowie Archive.” The museum had been granted unprecedented access to the Archive. If you are a Bowie fan, don’t miss this screening on Monday, Oct 17th.
In an industry dominated by male directors, Patricia Rozema is in the good company of other amazing Women directors in Canadian film, Sandy Wilson (My American Cousin etc.), Anne Wheeler (Loyalties etc), Lea Pool (Anne Trister etc), who have all won acclaim in and outside of Canada. Rozema’s first feature film, I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing, won the Prix de Jeunesse at the Cannes Film Festival in ’87.
For our Thursday film, we are screening Rozema’s latest feature starring Ellen Page, Into The Forest (14A). we can’t imagine ourselves living in a world deprived of electricity. In such a difficult and dreary situation found themselves a father and his two daughters, after a seemingly normal power outage lingered on, changing the lives of everyone in the region. What was the reason for this outage? Is it regional, or does it affect the whole country? No one really knows and as time passes, the family will have to put to the test its survival skills, adaptability and endurance, but most of all, the integrity of the familial bonds.
Coming Next: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, Hard Core Logo (20th Anniversary) – Member Monday film, Racing Extinction – Deconstructing Dinner Film Fest, and Ixcanul – Guatamala/France co-production.
