The Pitch (Oct. 21 – 27); The Week at a Glance

The Civic Theatre’s Home For Spectacular Movies.

A whole lot of variety this week at The Civic, from Hollywood, classic Canadian independent, documentary and international.

Tim Burton, a director of sweeping cinematic vision, always begs for a big screen experience, so do not wait for his latest, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (PG), to pop up in a format suited to your TV or computer screen to enjoy it.  When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers… and their powerful enemies. Ultimately, Jacob discovers that only his own special “peculiarity” can save his new friends.

Inadvertently, we have been celebrating a lot of Canadian film this October, with the recent screenings of Violent, The Bad Mother, The League of Exotique Dancers and the current schedule’s Into The Forest. And now here we are close to completing the month with a free Member Monday screening of Bruce MacDonald’s, shot in BC Indi classic Hard Core Logo on its 20th anniversary, Oct. 24th. Macdonald follows punk bank Hard Core Logo on a harrowing last-gasp reunion tour throughout Western Canada. As magnetic lead-singer Joe Dick holds the whole magilla together through sheer force of will, all the tensions and pitfalls of life on the road come bubbling to the surface.

On Wednesday, Deconstructing Diner Film Festival opens with Racing ExtinctionOscar®-winning director Louie Psihoyos (THE COVE) assembles a team of artists and activists on an undercover operation to expose the hidden world of endangered species and the race to protect them against mass extinction. Spanning the globe to infiltrate the world’s most dangerous black markets and using high tech tactics to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction, RACING EXTINCTION reveals stunning, never-before seen images that truly change the way we see the world. The film has received one Academy Award nomination and one Emmy nomination. Premiered 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

And to close of an this exciting week, for our Thursday film, The Civic screens Ixcanul. Like its titular Guatemalan volcano, Jayro Bustamante’s hypnotic film debut bubbles with the tension of a teenage girl at odds with her family’s native customs, before erupting into a frantic and quietly devastating third act

Coming Next: Deepwater Horizon, Shin Godzilla, Ruin and Rose, and “Week of the Dead” series (films which feature some of the great performers we’ve lost in 2016) –Labyrinth (Bowie), Purple Rain (Prince) w/ The Flicker (Tony Conrad), The Wind Will Carry Us (Abbas Kiarostami)
