The Pitch (Oct. 30 – Nov. 5)

From the beginnings of modern art to Canadian art rock and a few bumps in the night, this week at The Civic.

No, Jack Black is not our premiered art-rocker this week, but he does play author R.L. Stine in this week’s weekend/Tuesday feature Goosebumps (rated PG).  Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah, living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Zach’s friend Champ (Ryan Lee) to get all of them back in the books where they belong. As a Halloween promotion, Sony is offering a free child admission with the purchase of an adult admission for the Halloween day screening.

Our pioneer modern artists come in the form of Monday night’s presentation of Exhibition of Screen’s, The Impressionists.  Monet, Cezanne, Degas and Renoir are some of the world’s most popular artists with their works, and that of their contemporaries, fetching tens of millions of dollars around the globe. But who were they really? Why & how exactly did they paint? What lies behind their enduring appeal? To help answer these questions, this unique film secured unparalleled access to a major new exhibition focussing on the man credited with inventing Impressionism as we know it: 19th century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel. This eagerly anticipated international exhibition is possibly the most comprehensive exploration of the Impressionists in history.

As for our art rockers.  Arcade Fire has been a creative force in the Canadian and international music since the critically acclaimed release of Funeral in 2004. With the TIFF premiered documentary, The Reflektor Tapes, Award-winning filmmaker and music-video director Kahlil Joseph follows the iconic Canadian band as they complete their chart-topping 2013 album Reflektor and embark on the North American leg of their new world tour. Arcade Fire is one of the best live acts in music today and with The Civic’s sound and amazing picture, it is like scoring front row tickets to see this amazing band. Check out our Facebook page for clues to locations for hidden tickets around Nelson for the Wed. Nov. 4th on-screen concert.

For this week’s Thursday film, we are bringing in the Mongrel Media released Grandma (Rated PG). The smartly written inter-generational feminist comedy road movie finds Lili Tomlin in a dazzling renaissance. Elle (Tomlin) who has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when Elle’s teenage granddaughter Sage, facing an unplanned pregnancy, unexpectedly shows up needing $600 bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets. Check out this great New York Times review.

Coming next: Hopefully we can secure the latest Bond film, Spectre, on release, but if we can’t, Steve Jobs or Bridge of Spies.
