The Pitch (Oct. 9 – 15)
Mean streets, interns and the fight to preserve pristine wilderness and the climate.
On the split this weekend, we hit the mean streets of Boston in Black Mass (rated 14A). Johnny Depp gives an Oscar worthy portrayal of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. And on the less violent side, but probably still anxiety inducing, 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) discovering that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway). The Intern (Rated PG), Nancy Meyers latest is sure to be a great heart warming comedy to help un-see Depp’s brutality.
On the day following Thanksgiving, we give thanks to the hard work and dedication of all the people who fought big business interests to keep Jumbo Valley wild. On October 13, Patagonia presents two-screenings of the Sweetgrass produced documentary, Jumbo Wild, that charts the true story of the decades-long battle over the future of British Columbia’s iconic Jumbo Valley and highlights the tension between the protection of wilderness and the backcountry experience and ever-increasing development interests in wild places.
And fresh off the fight to preserve our local pristine wilderness, let’s fight to save our global climate. The Civic screens two-nights of the Avi Lewis documentary developed alongside Naomi Klein’s latest book: This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Environment. Klein frames the question, “What if confronting the climate crisis is the best chance we’ll ever get to build a better world?” Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything (rated PG) is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.
