The Pitch (Sept 4 – 10)
A pair of Covert CIA operatives at The Civic this week.
A Bourne Identity for the stoner set; American Ultra (rated 14A) finds small-town stoner Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg) spending most of his time getting high and writing a graphic novel. What Mike doesn’t know is that he was trained by the CIA to be a lethal killing machine. When the agency targets him for termination, his former handler activates his latent skills.
Elsewhere in the agency, CIA operative, Napoleon Solo, has to settle his differences with KGB agent Kuryakin to form the elite international force U.N.C.L.E. to stop a mysterious international criminal organization that is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The Man From U.N.C.L.E (rated PG) plays along side American Ultra for the weekend/Tuesday run.
Not connected to the CIA in anyway, Amy (rated PG), from BAFTA award-winning director Asif Kapadia (SENNA), tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words. Featuring extensive unseen archival footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can. Amy kicks off The Civic Theatre’s new bi-weekly documentary series on Wednesday, Sept. 9th.
And for your Thursday pleasure, we bring you another gem from the Sundance ’15 lineup. The Diary of a Teenage Girl (rated 18A), based on the graphic novel from Phoebe Gloeckner, is set in the San Francisco of the 1970s, about a precocious 15 year old girl, desperate to lose her virginity, whose sexual adventures begin with the seduction of her divorced mother’s 35 year old boyfriend, who she believes, briefly, is the handsomest man in the world.
