The Pitch – What’s happening at The Civic, Apr. 15 – 21

A smorgasbord of Canadian cinephilic delicacies, this week at The Civic.

It is National Canadian Film Day on Apr. 20 and we have a full week of Canadian related content to bring in the celebration.
Playing Fri – Sun and Tues is the French Canadian animated feature of the classic tale, Little Prince (rated G). The film will be presented in both English and French versions.  On the split, for two of the four days and back by popular demand, Canada (sans Harper) loving, Michael Moore’s, Where To Invade Next (rated PG) will play on Fri and Tues.  On Sat and Sun, The Bronze (rated 18A), co-starring one of Nelson’s prodigal sons, Thomas Middleditch, about a foul-mouthed former gymnastics bronze medalist who hasn’t amounted to much milking her local celebrity status, reluctantly taking on training a rising Olympics aspirant. Just Confirmed! – Thomas Middleditch will be streamed in live on-screen for a post screening Q&A moderated by Lucas Myers!
And on Wednesday… what the heck is National Canadian Film Day?
“April 20, 2016 is National Canadian Film Day, a day to throw off the shackles of fear and insecurity, stand together with Canadians from coast to coast and pat ourselves on the back for something other than various ice-related sports and sports-related doughnut shops (not that we don’t love ice-related sports and doughnuts). It’s a light-hearted intervention for our national consciousness, a wake-up call to anyone who has not yet been exposed to the great cinematic stories we tell one another in this cold, vast country.”
Over 170 Canadian film screenings are being held across the country on April 20th and The Civic Theatre will be partaking again with a pair of, by donation, screenings of great Canadian films.  For the 7pm slot we will be showing the recent BC produced, multi-Leo award winning, Eadweard (rated PG), about the godfather of cinema Eadweard Muybridge.  For our 9pm Canadian cult slot, we will be showing the enigmatic Guy Maddin’s Cowards Bend The Knee. Don’t miss out on the chance to see these great films on the biggest screen in Nelson.
Our Thursday film entry this week has no relation to Canada, but we won’t hold that against it; Touched With Fire (rated PG) is about two bipolar patients who meet in a psychiatric hospital and begin a romance that brings out all of the beauty and horror of their condition.
Coming next: Hopefully Hardcore Henry and The Boss on a split, but doubtful. Dazed and Confused (Member Monday), Al Purdy Was Here (Doc Wed) and Embrace of the Serpent
