This Week at the Civic (Oct. 3 – Oct. 08)
Imprisonment and Freedom
This week, the Civic with help from Sherpas Cinema, asks us to look at freedom and imprisonment beyond the penitentiary walls. Plucked from the freedom of his natural existence, Tilicum, an Orca whale, has spent his life in captivity since 1983 and has been responsible for 3 deaths. Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director of Blackfish (rated PG), shows the sometimes devastating consequences of keeping such intelligent and sentient creatures in captivity this Thursday at 7:30pm.
On Friday – Sunday and cheap Tuesday, Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve, delves into a fear that imprisons the back of every parent’s mind in Prisoners (rated 14A). When Keller Dover’s (Hugh Jackman’s) daughter is abducted how far will he go and what freedoms will he deprive others, to protect his family?
On Monday, Sherpas Cinemas brings us Into The Mind. A new movie from the creators of All I Can. Ultimate freedom can not come without knowing one’s own confines. Not just a ski movie, Into the Mind paints a philosophical portrait of human kind. How do we balance risk versus reward? Why are we inspired to rise to the challenges in our lives and what do we learn on this journey to attain them? Experience the majesty of the Himalaya, Alaska, Bolivia and beyond with the incredible athletes featured in this film.
Blackfish – Thursday. Oct. 03 – 7:30
